I just want to go on record I am against these NFL vets going after the league for benefits based on getting concussions. Its a crock. Do I think they should have better medical for the vets? Yes I do. But I also can be swayed by the argument that todays players should not have to pay a ton more to cover the guys that paved the way. That sounds harsh but it comes down to this. Yes they had to get jobs in the off season but as a whole, they were paid much more than the average guy on the street. In society if you dont put in your 401k, you end up as a blue hair handing out stickers at Walmart. So if these guys did not put away a ton, its not entirely up to the league to fix their bad business sense. That is another topic though. The topic of today is the suing for concussions. Yes the helmets of yesteryear were not as good as today. You might think a modern bicycle helmet is better, but lets keep in mind it was the most advanced for the day. Football is a violent game. It was then and it is now. These guy knew their were risks and they played Are you telling me all these famous guys from the 70’s and before living in the North Dallas’s of the world would not have played? They would have gone out and got jobs like the common man? I just dont buy it. They knew there was a risk, but they wanted the fame, they wanted the check and they wanted the perks of beign a star. Now sadly they are paying for it with their health, and while its a shame, they knew what they were getting into. As a very good friend of mine pointed out. ” I cannot go back and sue GMC because they did not have air bags back in the day.” And he is right, GM rolled out the safest car they could then and the league had the safest equipment available back in the day.
