I have debated off and on about this for years. Part of it was how do you define a cult hero? Well for one , in most cases, but not all they are not real famous, except for the hometown team. In some cases they are famous but for all the wrong reasons. They have to have a following of loyal fans, that is a given, but they obviously by definition cannot be a cult hero. Steve Carlton or Nolan Ryan would never make this list. They are not ” Cult” Ferris Bueller, Up in Smoke, and Office Space in the movie world would, so you kind of get the definition. Another example might be Gabe Kapler, if he was not on your team you did not know him, and while he will not make the first ever class, he does have potential for my Cult Sports Hero Hall of Fame.

1. Al Del Greco What is not to say about Al? He was a Houston Oiler, He was a kicker, and Nike Named him the greatest football player of all time in a commercial.

2. Danny Ainge. One of my all time favorites when it comes to Cult Sports Heros and the 2nd easiest pick for this Hall of Fame. He played baseball, he played shooting guard for some great Celtics teams, he was a world class cry baby and the man you loved to hate if you were not a Boston fan. He had good hair, he had ” How could you call that on me ?” attitude, and he had a solid jersey number in Boston (44). Congrats Danny, I know you are happy with this selection.

3. Vinny Testaverde Heisman winner that helped with the Heisman jinx. Vinny was the All American, that was a All American. He was great in the college and left you scratching your head for years in the pro’s. He threw so many picks early on they thought he was color blind, if he was not on your team for the first 10 years of his career you were thankful, but in the end. you wanted a guy like Vinny. You see Vinny had football smarts. Vinny was the guy as a backup you could count on. Vinny was the guy that could be a mentor, because no matter how shitty the pressure was on the starter Vinny had worse as a young man. Vinny’s conditioning workouts were legendary and that is why he could stick around for so many years. Vinny had a cannon, he loved his family, and as fans of his, you loved to whip out with “Vinny would have won the game !!”

4.Bob Uecker. The unaimous choice to make this Cult Sports Hero Hall of Fame. Whether he was George Owens, the sports caster sitcom man, Harry Doyle , the legendary announcer in the Major League Series of Movies, or simply “Mr. Baseball” in the great Miller Lite Commercials in the 1970’s and 80’s Bob is what the Cult Sports Hero . Show me a man that has had a Miller Lite and a nose bleed seat at a baseball game, north of age 37 , that has not said the famous saying “Oh, I must be in the Front Row !!”. He played 6 seasons of MLB, and only hit .200 for his career. He had 14 homeruns in his career, but get this one of them was off Sandy Koufax. Loud plaid jackets, Miller Lite and Full of Himself sum up Bob, and for that he is the Godfather of my Cult Hero Hall of Fame.
